Architectural and Functional Design in IT Projects, or How to Build a House

What are  your first thoughts when planning to build a house? How will it look? Will it be one story or two? How many bedrooms will it have, and where should they be located? How many utility rooms do you need, and where should they go? In other words, what will the architecture look like?

Next, you start thinking about whether the layout will be functionally convenient. Should the walk-in closet be located between the bedrooms? Should the office be on the first floor or the second to ensure it’s quieter? How often and for what purposes will you be climbing the stairs? In other words, what will the functional design look like?

Now, let’s transfer these thoughts to an IT project—for instance, in a company that produces and sells workwear. So far, they’ve been using separate accounting and warehouse modules that are not integrated. Over the past two years, the number of clients, suppliers, and orders has grown significantly. It’s now necessary to implement an ERP solution to unify resources in one place.

How Can a Business Architect Help?

A Business Architect can organize the architecture before the investment is made and before the ERP solution is implemented. They can identify which departments will work with the ERP solution, which business processes will be automated, and which will remain outside the scope of the new solution. The Business Architect will also define the connections to other architectures: data, application, and technical.

Architectural design helps management “visualize” how the solution will work even before investing in it. Later, after the investment is made, the architectural design will serve as Phase 0 of the IT project.

Architectural design is equally important for “greenfield” IT projects, and it is often even more challenging and demanding in such cases.

Why Architectural Design Matters in IT Projects

Today, Bulgaria is an IT destination for numerous reasons. Every day, thousands of specialists work on various client and in-house IT projects. But is the role of the Business Architect fully understood? How many projects allocate budget for Business Architecture?
